Ink Drawing Over Collage

Finally I am all caught up with Documented Life Project prompts!  This week was the last under the umbrella theme of ephemera.  The prompts were “real life” and “at this moment”.  I decided to utilise the latter phrase as an opportunity to practise working more intuitively.

Ephemera lends itself to collage so – without putting much thought into it – I grabbed at some bits and pieces that were on my art table (AKA my kitchen table).  Happily, I have been working in blue colour schemes a lot lately so it was easy to create a uniform palette on the page.  Once all the scraps and postage stamps were glued down, I used ink and wash to paint a female face on top of the collage, again not giving myself any time to get caught up inside my head and work more intuitively.

Week 30 - Ephemera - At This Moment

Done and dusted in no time at all and all caught up on DLP prompts.  Phew.

The White Rabbit

The next Documented Life Project I tackled was to involve layering while maintaining a focal point and the phrase was “Time Keeps on Ticking”.  I immediately thought of the White Rabbit from ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’.  Obviously the “time” element of the prompt was the major part of that but I think it was also partly because, like the White Rabbit, I am flustered and chasing my tail trying to catch up with all the things that need to be done since returning from our month long vacation.  Plus I am neurotic about punctuality.  Plus I have a bit of an obsession with drawing bunnies.

I used an ink wash for the background.  Annoyingly, some spray ink from the other side of the page leaked through onto the page, thus creating a muckle purple stain on the page.  I did not freak out.  I accepted it.  But I am still a wee bit annoyed.  The layering is all in the construction of the rabbit: he is card with book pages collaged onto him to create his clothes.  The rabbit’s pocket watch is made from a tag and a photo of a clock from a magazine.  I attached the watch to the rabbit’s pocket using some gold thread so that it dangles.  There was a lot of negative space left on the page so I filled it with the phrase, “I’m late, I’m late for a very important date”.

Week 28 - Time Keeps On Ticking

Ephemera Castle

The July theme for the Documented Life Project is Ephemera.  Knowing this to be the case, I kept all my tickets and leaflets and maps from our travels around Britain.  The prompt “Life with a History” made me think of all the castles we visited on our trip* so I decided to collage a castle.  Simple as that.

The background is two different colours of Dylusions ink.  I thought the vibrant colours would make the collage elements pop out from the page more but ultimately I also outlined using Posca paint pen.  It was quick and simple but fun to create.

Week 27 - Life with a History - Ephemera

The crenellated main building and the two side towers were taken from a map to the Chalke Valley History Festival, the doorway is a ticket to Stonehenge, the turret roofs are a map of Edinburgh Castle, the flag is from the ticket into Edinburgh Castle and the windows are luggage claim labels from our flight and postage stamps.

*Stay tuned for future posts featuring castles.
